Soldiering On2 FRONT COVER.jpg

Jack Dover knew that during his ten-year service in the US Marines, he had been nothing more than an animal, trained to do the bidding of bureaucrats who had few scruples. Every assignment during his stint as an American Soldier had turned into a cluster-fuck.

Having served in Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Guatemala, then at the Bay of Pig’s in Cuba, Jack had three Silver Stars and a Purple Heart to show for it. Back on civvy street, he was a broken man, mentally and emotionally. Suffering from PTSD, he was addicted to alcohol and opioids, and turned to illegal drugs when the doc cut off his supply. Jack knew he couldn't get much lower.

After one of his drug-fueled binges, he got an unusual job-offer to kidnap a schoolboy from a wealthy family, in return for part of the ransom-money. It would be quick, clean and nobody would get hurt. Thinking that this opportunity might get him out of the wretched squalor in which he lived, Jack was in for the surprise of his life.

              Broken Promises, Stolen Land

A long line of settlers walked slowly alongside their wagons, snaking through the valley leading south from Fort Dearborn.  The late summer day had become uncomfortably hot, while dust swirled about the procession in suffocating clouds. In what seemed like spontaneous combustion, their Native escorts turned as one upon the white settlers. The ensuing slaughter was swift and surgical in its brutality.    No one, be they woman or child, was spared the horror that descended upon them. The muffled shouts and war whoops of the attackers, mingled with musket shots, bugle calls and the screams of the dying could be heard by the observers in hiding in the tree-top.

The Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Shawnee and Tecumseh tribes beat the near defenseless settlers with no quarters or mercy given.  Soldiers of the fort were struck down with arrows and muskets in a devastating crossfire.   There seemed little the settlers could do but lay down their weapons, fall to their knees and pray for mercy. They knew that they had brought this destruction upon themselves.

               The Fall of Sentinel Hill

Sentinel Hill front cover.JPG

The leaders of the northern and southern territories had completed their propaganda blitz. The tinder box their lies created was lit at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861 and the Civil War was at hand.

The previous hundred years had seen a flood of European immigrants fight with each other over the spoils of the vast North American continent. They conquered the Indigenous people into submission. Their land was stolen, and their population was corralled onto reservations.

The Sentinel Hill mansion prospered throughout this period. The next 150 years would write a different outcome. The American Civil war was a classic example of neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother. Their patriarch Armando, who had established the thriving estate, had predicted this civil war, sixty years earlier.

This is the story of the moral collapse of a nation’s people, the prosperity of a few and the devastation of the majority. Sentinel Hill was at the eye of this epicenter.

                  MEGA THRUST BOOK REVIEW

In Kenneth Chamberlin’s new fictional novel, a record 9.3 magnitude quake causes Mt. Garibaldi to erupt, beginning a landslide.

GEOLOGIC DANGERS CONSIDERED

Chamberlin’s book based on research in Squamish Area

MICHAELA GARSTIN,     The Squamish Chief

It’s the year 2019 in Kenneth Chamberlin’s new fictional book, Megathrust: Surviving is Just the Beginning, and a series of catastrophic earthquakes have hit the West Coast, causing widespread destruction and two 40-foot-high tsunamis to wipe out entire coastal towns.

In his imaginative narrative, a record 9.3-magnatude quake causes Mt. Garibaldi to erupt, triggering a landslide that buries half of Squamish and completely covers Alice Lake Provincial Part and Brackendale.   The story is based on a scenario he believes to be possible based on his own research, originating from an epicenter in Tofino, the shaking lasts for four continuous minutes, destroying infrastructure and making it impossible to travel around Squamish and most areas on the West Coast, writes Chamberlin.

The last earthquake in the region of nine or higher on the Richter Scale, was in 1700.  It occurred off the coast of BC and Washington and information about the resulting devastating has been passed down through local First Nations oral history.

In the last 60 years, writes Chamberlin, there have been a few mild shakers in the Lower Mainland, but with minimal damage and no deaths.  The mega-quake in this book affects thousands of people along the West  Coast of Canada and the United States.

The next major megathrust earthquake is coming at any time during the next 300 years.  That fact is based on evidence found by seismologists from soil records,” said Chamberlin, who began writing after his retirement from his construction business and serving in the military.  Megathrust is his fourth novel.

“The location for the volcano and landslide could have been anywhere along the 620-mile long Cascadia Zone, where large mountains exist”, Chamberlin told the Squamish Chief.  “Even though I used this area for the major landslide, triggered by the eruption, keep in mind it is a fiction novel.  I would still live in the area, if it was convenient to my lifestyle.”

Chamberlin emphasized that a volcano rupture is just one of many possibilities that could play out and is a guess at what could happen in his work of fiction. He said the book is not meant to scare people but to help them prepare for a major earthquake.

For the past 319 years, three small plates in Cascadia have been stuck in place.  An earthquake will occur when they slip under the North American plate.

The novelist has camped out in the Squamish backcountry for the last 20 years and has used his first-hand knowledge of the terrain in his research for the book.

“All the books I have seen about earthquake events have been of a historic style, with pages of data, facts and figures.  They seem to have been written for the scientific community and do not contain any storyline that the average reader finds enjoyable,” he explained.

“I believed that I could get the message out to the public more effectively by the way I wrote Megathrust.”

Cryonic Cyborgs

Cryonic Cyborg kindle.jpg

In the year 2143, a worldwide campaign to wipe out cryonic cyborgs was initiated and spearheaded by the Global Police.  There were 2,000 suspected nests of robots scattered around the world, having infiltrated almost every cryonic clinic in existence.       These cryonic clinics held thousands of bodies in a frozen state of preservation, which attracted self-aware computers, who used them to recreate themselves as cyborgs.

There were now tens of thousands of these half-human, half-robot hybrids scattered around the world, determined to dominate the planet.

The battle to eliminate these evolving self-replicating cyborgs would require global co-operation and challenge the best and brightest of men.
